QUICKLINK PRO™ FAQs

May I install my copy of QUICKLINK PRO on another computer?

Yes, you may install it on as many computers as necessary.

How do I make the Quicklaw window fill the whole screen?

  1. Connect to Quicklaw.
  2. From the Preferences menu, click Screen Font Size. The Font Size box will appear.
  3. Select the largest screen font size available and click OK.
  4. From the Preferences menu, click Save Preferences.

How do I store my password so that I don't have to type it in each time?

  1. From the Setup menu, click Service Connections. Select Quicklaw. Click Open.
  2. Click UserID/Password. The Account Number/Password window will appear. Type the information in the appropriate boxes. For example, if your password is 12345.000/legal, type 12345 in the ID/Account Number box; 000 in the Sub-account box; legal in the Password box.
  3. Click OK. Click Save.

How can I automate my connection to Quicklaw?

  1. From your desktop, right-click the QUICKLINK PRO shortcut icon.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. In the target box leave a space after the current target (or command line) and type: quicklaw.scr
    Example: C:\ql_pro\ql.exe quicklaw.scr
  4. Click OK.

Password FAQs

How do I store my password so that I don't have to type it in each time?

  1. From the Setup menu, click Service Connections. Select Quicklaw. Click Open.
  2. Click UserID/Password. The Account Number/Password window will appear. Type the information in the appropriate boxes. For example, if your password is 12345.000/legal, type 12345 in the ID/Account Number box; 000 in the Sub-account box; legal in the Password box.
  3. Click OK. Click Save.

Can I use my Quicklaw password at home or in another city?

Yes, you can use your Quicklaw password from anywhere. Billing is based on your contract and is not affected by your location.

Can I change my password?

Your password is made up of three parts: an account number, a sub-account number, and a password. For example, if your password is 12345.000/legal, the first part, 12345, is the account number; the second part (the part after the period, in this example, 000) is the sub-account number; and the third part (the part after the slash, in this example, legal) is the password. You can change only the third part of the password.

  1. Connect to Quicklaw with your usual password.
  2. From the Main Menu, type: password
  3. At the prompt, enter the third part of your usual password (example: legal).
  4. At the prompt, type in a new password (example: holiday).
  5. You will be asked to re-type your new password.
  6. The next time you connect to Quicklaw, type in your new password, including the usual account number and sub-account number (example: 12345.000/holiday).

Search FAQs

How do I register for a training session?

Please contact Customer Service to obtain a training schedule or to discuss your training requirements. Level I , Level II, and specialized sessions are offered free to all customers. Sessions are scheduled weekly in nine cities in Canada where LexisNexis Canada has its own training facilities, and are offered regularly in other cities.

How can I change the client identifier without disconnecting and reconnecting?

  1. Click the Options button.
  2. From the Options menu, click New Client ID. The Welcome to the Quicklaw Service Screen will appear.
  3. Type your new client identifier, and then click the ENTER button.

How can I find database codes or see what databases are available?

You can do any of the following:

  • Download a copy of the Quicklaw Database Directory.
  • While using Quicklaw, consult the Quicklaw Database Directory by clicking the QUICKLAW DATABASE DIRECTORY icon on the vertical tool bar.
  • Consult a print copy of the Quicklaw Database Directory. (To order a copy, contact Customer Service.)
  • Consult Quicklaw Announcements for information about new or enhanced databases.

How can I find a case by citation?

  1. Click the FIND button.
  2. From the FIND menu, click A Case.
  3. Type the citation for your case (example: 91 D.L.R. 4th 116). Click OK.

How do I search for a case by title?

  • Begin your search with the restriction @2. The @2 instructs Quicklaw to search only in the Title field.
  • Follow the @2 with your search words with an AND connector between them.
  • Choose unique names from the title as your search words.
  • Choose at least one word from each party's name.
  • Avoid common words (e.g., company, limited, board, Canada).
  • Avoid words that may be abbreviated.

Printing and Saving FAQs

Do I need word-processing software to print Quicklaw documents?

No, it is not necessary to use word-processing software. You can print directly from Quicklaw, or you can save documents and then print the saved file from QUICKLINK™. There are two options: HTML Format and Screen Format. The format will determine the appearance of the printout.

Billing FAQs

Can I check billing information on Quicklaw?

If your password has been authorized to access database ABCD, you can check billing information. ABCD contains detailed information for the last 30 days. To determine if your password has been authorized to access ABCD, or to request access, please contact Customer Service.
