Search Help - Connectors

Connectors are commands used between search words. Connectors instruct Quicklaw on the specific relationship between words in your search results.

AND Connector
OR Connector
Proximity Connector
Combining Connectors

AND Connector

  • instructs Quicklaw to find both terms in the document
  • is represented by the ampersand (&) or the word AND
Example One age & discrimination
  This searches for documents that contain at least one occurrence of age and discrimination.
Example Two age & discrimination & charter
  This searches for documents that contain at least one occurrence of age and discrimination and charter.

OR Connector

  • instructs Quicklaw to search for either term in the document
  • is represented by the word OR
Example One marijuana OR cannabis
  This searches for documents that contain at least one occurrence of either marijuana or cannabis.
Example Two gun OR firearm OR weapon
  This searches for documents that contain at least one occurrence of any of gun or firearm or weapon.

Numeric Proximity Connector
Paragraph Proximity Connector

Numeric Proximity Connector

  • instructs Quicklaw on how far away the search terms may be from each other in the document
  • is represented by a forward slash followed by a number (e.g., /3)
  • the number must be between 1 and 255 (A proximity of 1 means that the terms must be next to each other, a proximity of 2 means that the terms can be up to 2 words away from each other, etc.)
  • if no number is specified after the slash (e.g., motor / vehicle), Quicklaw will assume a proximity of 1
  • the words can appear in either order
Example One criminal /1 code
  This searches for criminal beside code. For example, documents with criminal code will be retrieved.
Example Two expectation /2 privacy
  This searches for expectation up to two words away from privacy. For example, documents with expectation of privacy will be retrieved.
Example Three drug /4 abuse
  This searches for drug up to 4 words away from abuse. For example, documents with any of the following expressions will be retrieved.
  drug abuse
abuse of drugs
drug and alcohol abuse
abuse of various addictive drugs

Paragraph Proximity Connector

  • instructs Quicklaw to find words in the same paragraph, in any order
  • is represented by a forward slash and the letter "p" ( /p ).
Example priority /p creditor
  This searches for documents that have priority in the same paragraph as creditor.

Combining Connectors

You may use a combination of connectors in one search:

Example One libel OR defamation OR slander & qualified /1 privilege
  Documents containing any of the following will be retrieved:
  libel and qualified privilege
defamation and qualified privilege
slander and qualified privilege
Example Two loss /2 memory OR amnesia
  Documents containing any of the following will be retrieved:
  loss of memory
memory loss
amnesia
Example Three freedom /2 expression & charter
  Documents containing freedom of expression and charter will be retrieved.
Example Four freedom /2 expression OR freedom /2 speech & charter
  Documents containing any of the following will be retrieved:
  freedom of expression and charter
freedom of speech and charter
